With over 15 years of experience in law enforcement as a bodyguard and Deputy Sheriff, Anthony Burnside has real world experience in the field of executive protection. His background in Behavioral and Abnormal Psychology allows him to be calm and collected in high-pressure situations. This particular skill set also allows him to formulate psychological profiles in threat assessment cases.

Due to this background, Anthony has frequently been called to consult for television projects and also called to speak at seminars. The photo above is a photo of legendary actress Jane Fonda after she was spit upon by a disturbed individual. As you can see, she is being wiped off by a security guard. An EP trained protective operative would have never had to wipe her off (which is embarrassing to the client) because he/she would have taken the necessary steps to prevent a situation like this from taking place. Why is this important? Lets pretend that he did not spit, but got close enough to her to throw a corrosive acid in her face or even produce a weapon of some kind. Perhaps it could have been cyanide concealed within a nasal squeeze bottle(instant death). What if the assailant possessed some sort of contagious disease that could be transmitted via saliva ? As a protection specialist, my primary objective

Protective Surveillance:
This type of protection is low profile and discreet and very effective.
This is still a full on protective detail but is orchestrated in such a way that the specialist works covertly, observing the principal and his environment from a distance, blending into the operational surroundings so as not to draw undue attention to the client’s movements. But will become overt to intervene if the specialist observes any activities believed to be a potential hazard to the client. Now this type of operation lowers the the visual profile of the protectee and allows the client to carry out their business with the peace of mind that within seconds, a specialist can be at their side to deal with any security risk. It also allows for a certain amount of counter surveillance, this can pinpoint abnormal amounts of interests in the client’s movements from outside sources.

FAQ 1

Q: Is the profession increasing in popularity or decreasing?
A:Due to the increase in world violence, there is an increase in people wanting to conduct high-level security, although I am unable to comment on the quality of their training.

Q: How many deaths and/or injuries have there been in the body guarding industry?
A:That's hard to say because not all deaths and injuries are publicized. I do know of five occasions where a person has conducted a basic bodyguard crash course and taken on a high-risk operation, believing they had the essential training and experience. These five people were killed within seven days of starting their assignments.

Q: What is the biggest misconception people have about bodyguards?
A:That they are big, arrogant and unintelligent. These three misconceptions are completely untrue. Some of the U.S. Secret Service bodyguards are the most intelligent people in the world, as they must complete many years of tertiary education before moving on to several more years at their agency's institutions. I have a background in psychology (behavioral and abnormal), security, and law enforcement and protection specialist training. All of this training contributes to resolving situations professionally and proficiently.

Q: Did you ever drop a client because of his strange requests or behavior?
A:I have dropped a few clients due to not abiding by the contracts and conditions. Sometimes this was due to the fact that the client was not being concerned about their welfare, and putting myself or other operatives in danger.


Q: Do you screen your clients or would you accept anyone as a client?
A:I question and screen clients before providing any protection procedures. Should the client be involved in present illegal activities, I would probably decline services.

Q: Can the client ever overrule your security suggestions?

A:A client may sometimes offer suggestions about a change in security, although on most occasions, the security would have already been prearranged to offer the highest level of security and safety. Once this is explained to the client, they give in.

Q: Is being a bodyguard unfairly glamorized in the media and Hollywood?

A:Yes! Extremely! Being a professional bodyguard is nothing like what they show in Hollywood. You may spend time out and about with the client, but during this time you are forever concentrating. Here's an example: If you go to a sporting event and are walking around looking for a specific person in the crowd, how tired and frustrated do you get? Doing this continuously for hours on end, while watching the client at the same time, is extremely strenuous, therefore making you less alert.

Q: Do security companies provide professional bodyguard services?
A:BEWARE! There are a number of security companies who try and simulate the high-level security that I do. They dress their security guards in suits and pretend that they are highly trained security specialists. This is a very dangerous decision, as the security guard does not have the physical training or the training in psychological assessment to conduct this type of security. A large security company in Australia learned this the hard way in 1999, when two of their "security guards" in suits, protecting a client, were confronted by four Biker gang members. Both security guards were seriously assaulted and physically ran off, leaving the client to be fatally stabbed.

Q: In the movies, we see one guy take on ten bodyguards and win. Is that really possible?

A: As I previously said this is Hollywood fiction. A properly trained professional bodyguard is trained to defend a client from 3-4 attackers who are unarmed. We have a saying in the business. If your client sees trouble than you have failed. But a well trained specialist quickly evacuates his client out of the area if there is the slightest hint of danger.

Q: Why did you get into this business?

A: I have always loved providing protection and helping people and the action, danger, and being able to get out of a situation should it happen.
Q: What is the difference between a security guard and a bodyguard?

A: Security guards are of "low" level security. This is providing security at a shopping center, a car parking lot, or a nightclub, for example. This is where the security level is low and there is no risk of people being killed.
(Personal Protection Operative) or Specialist operative performs the procedures of high-level security. This is providing security that relates to people's lives. A security guard has nowhere close to the level of training as a professional (specialist) bodyguard. To be a security guard, you need a security license, which can be acquired after completing a very basic simple test.
Professional (Specialists) bodyguards, on the other hand, are trained to perform the highest levels of security. They are trained in everything from Advanced Weapons Disarming, Anti-Ambush Procedures and Anti-Terrorism, to psychology, which is used in Immediate Psychological assessment to determine whether an approaching person is going to be a threat or not to a client. These operatives are trained to deal with all and any security situation.

Q: Bodyguards stand out of a crowd, yet they have to be in the background,figuratively speaking; how do you balance that?

A: The professional bodyguard is always in the background and is only called upon in time of need. They do not interfere with the client unless required. They are to be invisible to the client, not the public. Some security companies trying to simulate this high-level security tend to make the security completely "invisible," or "covert." This is incorrect, as you must make it visible to the public that the client's security presence is a severe deterrent from any attack.
Invisible or covert security presents the illusion that there is no security; therefore any attackers are under the impression that an attack is easy and they will therefore attempt one. It's not until the attacker has performed the attack that they realize there is security. By this time, the attacker may have already caused an injury to the client or the people around him. The idea is to make any attacker think about whether an attack is worth their while. This is why the U.S. President's security is never invisible.

Q: What does a client look for in a bodyguard?

A: A client seeks personnel with a high level of experience and training, as they are employing a person whom will be providing security protection for their life. If the client is from a professional organization, they will demand the same level of professionalism from the bodyguard agency. Celebrities seeking bodyguards seek operatives who are well-presented, well-spoken, fit, and reasonably attractive. They require guards who don't stand out more than they do.

Q: What does a bodyguard look for in a bodyguard, as a colleague?

A: Bodyguards, should they request a specific partner, will choose someone they can trust. They will choose a colleague with the highest level of experience and training so that, should an incident occur, they will not be required to protect the other bodyguard and the client.

Q: Do bodyguards ever "sell out" and turn on their client?

A: Never! Unless the bodyguard is not a professional...

Q: Which professionals are in most need of bodyguards?

A: There are many professions that acquire the services of a professional bodyguard. For instance people like bank managers (they have back access codes); lawyers (protection from disgruntled clients); VIPs and celebrities (zealous fans); corporate executives and their families (wealthy people can be used for ransom demands); religious leaders; doctors; witnesses; journalists; government ministers; as well as any person whose life may be at risk of injury or death.

Q: Do you prefer clients that are entertainers, politicians, or business people?

A: No preference! Each client is different, for instance clients with professional careers tend to comprehend the seriousness of high-level security and are able to work with me professionally and proficiently, making my job a lot easier. Celebrities are the same way but their entourage can sometimes be an obstacle.

Q: Finally, every man's fantasy: How often are women used to break your defenses?

A: All the time, although you need to remember is that, no operative is allowed to flirt or pick up women on duty Period! Now even off duty you have to be careful. My clients pay me to protect them and not to pickup on women. Also women have been known to be used as decoys, distractions, sometimes they are reporters. So the specialist has to forever be on guard against unauthorized access to his client, having a good job is always better than having a good woman.

Stalking the Stars, Why Celebrities Need Bodyguards!

Most of us are satisfied with an autographed photo of our favorite Hollywood personality – if we are lucky enough to obtain one. From scandal sheets we absorb a torrent of gossip – some true and some not true – about the private lives, hobbies, interests, or even sex lives of our favorite movie stars. From television or magazines we spy on superstars in ways that earlier generations would not have been able to imagine. The misfortunes of the high and mighty beckon screen-stuck masses like steel filings to a magnet; the movie fan’s appetite to be brought closer to his or her movie idol through prattle columns has become big business: tattlesheets and gutter tabloids now rake in a billion dollars a year.It can also be dangerous. Particularly shocking was the death of 21-year-old Rebecca Schaeffer in 1989. She was at the beginning of a promising career as an actress when an unemployed Tucson, Ariz., fast-food worker, who had developed an obsession with her, struck her down. The only child of a psychologist and a writer, Rebecca was sleek, svelte and beautiful. Her beauty landed her on the cover of Seventeen. She couldn’t even afford a phone when her agent tacked a note on her apartment door telling her to report to the set of "My Sister Sam," her breakthrough. She moved from New York to California and rented an apartment in West Hollywood. She lived a quiet life, alone. The show was a success, but Rebecca would never live to enjoy it. Robert Bardo, 21, bombarded Rebecca with swarms of love letters. He collected videos of Rebecca’s TV shows: "Amazing Stories," "My Sister Sam," "One Life to Live." He bedecked his room with dozens of glossy publicity photos of the girl he lusted for. He mailed an ominous-sounding letter to his sister in Tennessee, telling her if he couldn’t have Rebecca, no one else would. He hopped a Hollywood-bound bus in Tucson, hell-bent on tracking her down. On July 17, 1989, he called her agent’s office and tried to find out where she lived. Refused this information, he relentlessly roamed the streets, flashing her photo and asking passerbys if they knew her address. He needlessly paid a private detective $250 to find her. (For as little as $1, a person can go into any of California’s DMV offices, fill out Form 70 stating who they are, what person they want information on, the reason, and how they intend using it. Even if they lie, the information is delivered on the spot.) With this information, on July 18, Bardo rang Rebecca’s doorbell at 120 N. Sweetzer Ave. A neighbor who heard the shots and bloodcurdling screams rushed to her door and found Schaeffer’s body clad in a black robe, twitching in the building’s foyer. Her arms were akimbo and her feet were wedged between the door and its frame. Witnesses saw a young man in a yellow shirt jogging up the Hollywood block. He turned into an alley and disappeared like a poltergeist. Sirens screaming, Rebecca was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She lingered for 30 minutes before she died.
Back in Tucson, several motorists called 911 to report a man running around in traffic on Interstate 10. It looked like he was trying to get hit. In court, he appeared dazed and confused. "I could probably tell you what I did after I killed her, how I got sick and all...but I don’t feel like it," he said. Convicted of capital murder in a non-jury courtroom, Bardo was sentenced to life without parole by Superior Court Judge Dino Fulgoni on Dec. 20, 1991. Eyes flashing like Satanic neons, Bardo told the judge: "The idea I killed her for fame is totally ridiculous. I do realize the magnitude of what I’ve done. I don’t think it needs to be compounded by a bunch of lies because she’s an actress."

No celebrity has lived under the weight of constant threats and harassment more than Madonna. The beady eyes of 38-year-old Robert Hoskins peering through binoculars spied her everywhere she went. Dissatisfied, he scaled the walls of her Hollywood Hills estate and left notes on her door. He threatened to slice her throat if she didn’t marry him. The third time Hoskins climbed the wall he was shot. "I shot him because he was definitely the kind of character that would carry through his threats," the bodyguard said. Hoskins was convicted in 1996 and sentenced to 10 years and six months with psychiatric services. In 1994, another obsessed fan, Todd Michael Lawrence came to the gate of Madonna’s 25,000-square-foot mansion. He rang the buzzer and said he was Madonna’s husband, coming home to spend a frolicsome weekend. The shock of being told to "get lost" unhinged his mind. With iron determination, he scaled the stucco wall and was arrested. He was put on probation and released on $13,000 bail.

THERESA SALDANA

In 1982 a hostile fan appeared at the front door of Defiance star Theresa Saldana and stabbed her 10 times. Arthur Jackson, a Scottish drifter, claimed he was on a divine mission to send the actress to heaven. He served seven years in a sanitarium, was released, and disappeared into a rogue’s gallery of forgettable villains. Most celebrities receive boxes of fan mail, but along with the letters of praise and admiration, occasionally come letters of hate – sick letters from loony-tunes. Sometimes the letters are just weird. Other letters leave a lingering malaise that leaves the stars fearful for their lives.

Michael J Fox
So it was the magnetic personality of Michael J. Fox when he started getting tacky mail from a shipping clerk named Tina Ledbetter, age 26. All told, Ledbetter sent Fox 6,000 letters. She demanded that he leave his wife for her or see his career fade away.
When he failed to respond she sent him a box of rabbit droppings. That’s when Fox called the police. The woman ended up in a padded cell vowing revenge. With the list of weird and often violent overtures steadily growing, the Los Angeles Police Department keeps active files on overzealous fans. In addition, some celebrities pay private security agencies and personnel as much as $250,000 a year for protection from stalkers and intruders.

David Letterman Dave’s List of Stalkers

Still, it did not stop Margaret M. Ray from breaking into talk-show host David Letterman’s New Canaan, Conn., home when he was away. She and her son slept in his bed, watched television and drove around in his Porsche. She was caught at a tollbooth without any money while claiming to be his wife. When correctional officers informed Ray’s sentencing judge that Ray had thrown urine on them and had spit on them, the judge gave Ray up to 10 months in prison and 14 months in a state mental institution. A few months after her release, she was back in the same courtroom charged with stalking astronaut Story Musgrave at his home near Kissimmee.
After years of tantrums, on Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, the 46-year-old tortured woman walked to the edge of the railroad tracks in Hotchkiss, Colo., knelt down in front of a speeding train, and was killed. A week before Ray’s self-willed death, Nellie Ruth Shirley, 39, of Honea Path, S,C., was arrested in the driveway of Letterman’s hacienda after stalking the famous party-giver for months. Letterman did not oppose probation for Shirley so long as she stayed away from him. Over the years his image as an amiable personality has attracted many fans with emotional traits who have tried to invade his goldfish-bowl existence.

Buoyancy and the star image is not always rewarding: A farmer named Robert Kieling called Canada pop singer Anne Murray 263 times in six months before she had him arrested and sent to prison for harassment. His grandiose scheme was to marry her, or to see that no one else did.

Michael Jackson
In May, 1997, Lavon Muhammed rang the doorbell of Michael Jackson’s three-story Tudor-style house on his Neverland Valley estate, brushed past his housekeeper, and firmly announced, "I’m family." She went to the kitchen, made herself a snack, and proceeded to make herself at home. An aghast housekeeper summoned a security guard. The cops arrived and Michael’s mansion was enlivened by a public fracas that dominated the 6 o’clock news.
It was the eighth time the 41-year-old, star-struck woman had been arrested for entering the singer’s ranch north of Los Olivos. On April 24 she was sentenced in Lompoc to three years probation. She was given 90 days for this latest incident. In court, she claimed she was Jackson’s common-law wife who had borne him four children.With more and more Hollywood luminaries being stalked, film studios posted armed guards around the sets of sitcoms, and even the littlest-known stars shuttered themselves in seclusion fearing for their lives.


Clint Eastwood, Michael Landon, Jerry Lewis

Major stars like Clint Eastwood, Michael Landon and Jerry Lewis carried guns after being stalked by too-adoring fans. One female fan batted her mascared eyes and told Landon, "You’ll have to look over your shoulder the rest of your life."
A gooseflesh tale of woe is the nine years of terror endured on a large-scale by Jerry Lewis, one of this century’s most recognizable entertainers. Until the star finally had the courage to decide enough was enough, he was fearful for his life and the life of his 6-year-old daughter.
Lewis became a target of threats not because of jealousy over his celebrity status, but because he tried to do a favor for an employee in 1989. When Lewis’ housekeeper asked him to do a background check on Gary Benson, a man she had become engaged to, Lewis pulled strings and obtained a protracted police file on his housekeeper’s fiancé and presented it to her. She told Benson about it and that triggered a lengthy string of harassing phone calls to the comedian’s home. Threats of violence and death against Lewis became an obsession with Benson.
Lewis fired the housekeeper. She and Benson were married, then divorced. For three nightmarish years Lewis received at least two menacing phone calls a week. But he didn’t notify police until his daughter’s life was threatened. Lewis said he spent $80,000 a month for security protection against his 55-year-old antagonizer.
Diagnosed chronic schizophrenic, Benson was convicted of stalking and threatening to kill Lewis in 1995. Sentenced to six years, he spent a majority of that time in mental wards. At Benson’s parole hearing in October of 1998, Lewis said, "I want the system to work for me and others, I want to keep him in jail." At Lewis’ request, Dr. Clifford Kuhn studied the Benson stalking case. His findings: "Gary Randolph Benson is suffering from a chronic schizophrenic illness for which there is no apparent effective treatment. He is periodically seized without warning by unpredictable homicidal decisions and impulses and, as such, should be considered potentially extremely dangerous at all times." Benson was denied parole on October 14, 1998. Even from jail he has apparently found ways to continue to threaten Lewis. He told a doctor at a psychiatric clinic that he hears voices telling him to kill Lewis. "I am convinced that he will kill me if he ever gets out," Lewis said recently.

News Anchors
Philadelphia news anchor Larry Kane said songwriter Karl Zielinski had been stalking him for 11 years, mostly by mail. He said Zielinski showed up at KYW’s studio one day and asked a guard to fetch him. When the guard asked Zielinski what he wanted Kane for, Zielinski replied, "I just want to kill the bastard and get out of here." On Nov. 19, 1997, Zielinski was convicted of stalking by Municipal Judge Matt Coppolino and given two years probation. He also ordered Zielinski to undergo mental evaluations. With his stalker on the loose, ever-avid tabloids reported that Kane hired around-the-clock bodyguards and purchased guard dogs to patrol his grounds.

Dan Rather

CBS news anchor Dan Rather was confronted in January 1997 while strolling down New York’s Park Avenue. A man, who had been stalking him, punched him from behind in the jaw and knocked him dizzy. Rather ran into a nearby building with the man chasing him. William Tager, age 49, told a psychiatrist that he attacked Rather and even considered crippling him, but changed his mind. The law faltered badly. Released, Tager stalked and killed a stagehand. This time he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Sonny Bono
The late Sonny Bono was another stalking victim slated for the Doom Book. James Hamlin hounded and stalked him for several years, making cracks about how Sonny "would look in a casket." In May, 1993, Bono, acting as his own attorney, requested in his Superior Court petition for an injunction that Hamlin stay at least 150 feet away from him, his family and his property. He claimed Hamlin, using high-power binoculars, had been spying on him from the hills above his Palm Springs mansion. Bono said his family had suffered emotional and physical problems as a result of Hamlin’s pleasure-mad harassment. Hamlin, 40, was committed to Patton State Hospital in Highland, Ca., after he admitted suffering from manic-depressive disorder.

Jodie Foster Still shaken by an event that she said was unprecedented during her many years in the film industry, director-producer-actress Jodie Foster was not regarded as ‘prey’ herself, but John Hinckley Jr. shot President Reagan in 1981 simply to impress her. Years after Hinckley’s conviction, photographs of Foster adorn the walls of his mental hospital room.

Other Stars A few fans have been given a slap on the wrist or a light fine and a warning for stalking stars such as Oliva Newton-John, Morgan Fairchild and Sly Stallone. In most cases, however, police can do little more than enforce a restraining order or keep an eye on the home of a would-be-victim. The problem of apprehending stalkers has long plagued police and the courts because the nature of the crime is so complex and the cases are difficult to prosecute. Dozens of nervous victims have turned to Gavin de Becker, a studio security specialist hired by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, John Travolta, Robert Redford, Robert Ryan and Cher. De Becker keeps FBI-like files, classifies fans according to the threat they pose and has frequently disguised himself or his staff as limousine drivers to intercept a fanatical fan. Unfortunately, no amount of security is likely to stop a deranged person with an appetite for meeting or killing his favorite celebrity.

Steven Spielberg A serpent spell fell over director-producer Steven Spielberg in the guise of Jonathan Norman.
"The threat was very real to me," a shaken, sometimes crying, Spielberg told a crowded Santa Monica courtroom. "No one before has come into my life in a way to do me harm or my family harm," he sobbed. "I really felt –and I still to this day feel-- I am prey to this individual."
Visibly shaken, Spielberg recalled that he learned of Norman’s plan to rape him while he and his family were in Ireland filming a movie. His stalker was arrested after he made two attempts to invade Spielberg’s Pacific Palisades palazzo in 1997. "I was first stunned and then terrified," he told the seven-woman, five-man jury. "I reacted to the information, at first, with disbelief, and then I became quite frightened." Spielberg said he learned of Norman’s sexual obsession with him after the bodybuilder was arrested with a box containing handcuffs, duct tape, and a day planner with names of Spielberg’s family and Hollywood associates. "I was concerned that he brought so many handcuffs. I could only speculate that what he wanted to do to me, he might also want to do to someone else in my family. The razor knife could have been used for...you know," Spielberg said, slowly passing his finger across his throat. Asked if he was still frightened, Spielberg said, "I don’t think he will be satisfied until he accomplishes his mission. And I think I am the subject of his mission. " Judge Steven Suzakawa sentenced the demented stalker to 25 years to life on June 16, 1998. Like the survivor of the Maelstrom, Spielberg’s encounter with his stalker turned his hair white.

Elle McPherson In yet another case of a celebrity being stalked, Michael Mischler pleaded guilty to breaking into the home of model Elle MacPherson after stalking her for months. Court records show he found nude photographs of her and threatened to put them on the Internet if Elle didn’t pay him $60,000. He was arrested when he came to Elle’s house to collect the money, and was later convicted of extortion.

Catherine McLements Jodie Filetti found herself in Campbelltown Local Court charged with stalking "Water Rats" TV star Catherine McLements. McClements, who portrayed police constable Rachel "Goldie" Goldstein on the show, claimed she had her garbage stolen, her car vandalized and sexually explicit graffiti scribbled on her inner-city home, falsely claiming she was homosexual. Trial records reveal that Filetti repeatedly harassed and telephoned a hotel where McClements was staying to have her paged. A search of Filetti’s home revealed photographs of McClements and television scripts stolen from the actor’s house. A police statement said Filetti claimed she couldn’t stop herself and would likely re-offend if she wasn’t committed. Consequently, her bail conditions ban her from contacting McClements or traveling to "Water Rats" locations. She must report to police once a day.

TONI BRAXTON
Beautiful Toni Braxton, star of the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast was being stalked by a real-live beast. While measures were being taken to ensure her safety, she lived in fear; looking over her shoulder and cutting her performances from eight to seven a week.
Whenever she left the theater she wore a disguise and was accompanied by discrete bodyguards. Reportedly, she is still being threatened by letters and e-mail from an invisible fan who says if he can’t have her, no one will.

Beyond Stalking

Most overzealous fans are harmless -- marriage proposals, futile rendezvous attempts or innocuous phone calls. But when death strikes, it’s a terrible price of fame. So it was with the Lennon Sisters in 1962.
Peggy started getting mail from a fan called Chester W.H. Young, as if they were married. He asked about "cutie-pie," the baby he fantasized they had, and about their home. Peggy, her sisters Kathy, Janet and Dianne, were frequently stalked by a man with a strange look in his eyes. He appeared at rehearsals, at restaurants, and sat behind them in church. Finally the disgruntled sister-singers called the cops. Claiming he demoralized the rules of decency, a judge packed him off to a mental hospital. Released in 1968, he wrote letters to President Nixon, threatening to kill him if he did not help in his desire to marry into the Lennon family. The FBI was asked to investigate. Letters to the Lennons added nuances of depravity that scriptwriters never dreamed of. On August 12, 1996, Bill Lennon, the father of the girls, had gone to a parking lot to drive home. Suddenly, Young lifted a rifle and shot him in the head. The grief-stricken daughters immediately realized who had killed their father. While a manhunt for the madman ensued, the girls were placed under strict police protection. The search for Young ended on Oct. 11. He was found in his car in California’s Heartbreak City. He had committed suicide with the same rifle used to kill Lennon. For the sisters, Young’s suicide de passion was a peculiar ending to seven years of terror.

Princess Caroline Raven-haired Princess Caroline of Monaco was targeted for a post-mortem by a deranged stalker in December of 1993. He longed to take Cleopatra-like photos of her, reverently posed as if she were Queen of the Nile. Later diagnosed as a demented and dangerous man, he wrote her love letters that eventually turned threatening when she didn’t answer him. He wrote that he would kill himself in front of the princess and her children if she went through with her plans to marry Vincent Lindon. These threats, and later intimidations, have thus far gone unfulfilled.

Monica Seles
In an unprecedented act of fan partisanship, Monica Seles, who was in the process of dethroning Germany’s Steffi Graf as the No. l ranked woman tennis player in the world, was stabbed in the back by a fan of Graf’s as Seles was winning her match against Graf at a tournament in Hamburg, Germany. The decision on Oct. 13, 1993, to sentence Gunther Parche to a mere two years’ probation for the attack on Seles remains a blight on the German judicial system. The sentencing judge, Elke Bosse, said she believed Parche’s contention that he only meant to maim Seles, not kill her.


Andrea Thompson
In September 1998, 34-year-old Gianluigi Assennato, was given a jail term for stalking and threatening NYPD Blue actress Andrea Thompson. The actress, who portrays Detective Jill Kirkendall on the show, said Thompson slashed her tires, phoned verbal threats and made in-person threats of violence against her.

Tina Sinatra
It’s shockability at its utmost when a Hollywood star is the stalker.
Handsome, cocksure actor James Farentino was desperately in love with the exotically beautiful Tina Sinatra, and for five stormy years their romance attracted the attention of print cacklers. Finally his possessiveness took a toll on Tina. Suffering from nervous exhaustion, she unburdened herself from him in January of 1993. Then, all the hidden cruelties surfaced.
Farentino claimed he was nine-tenths blotto when he kicked her door in. He ran when the cops came, but he never stopped stalking her, or calling her at wee hours on the telephone. He purchased gadgetry to spy on her and followed her constantly. When he threatened to kill her, she had him arrested. In August, and again in September of 1993, he was dragged into court and charged with two counts of stalking and threatening. A court commissioner ordered an evaluation to determine if he was eligible for a domestic-violence diversion program. To date, if he violates his restraining order, Farentino faces up to 42 months in jail.

The Law

In 1996 President Clinton signed legislation strengthening federal protections against stalking, ending a tedious campaign by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, who herself was the victim of a stalker. "No one should have to go in fear of her life because of a stalker," she said.
The legislation makes it a federal crime to cross state lines with the intent of harassing someone. Punishment measures are also strengthened. Now, those convicted of stalking face from five to 20 years if the victim is injured or for life if the victim dies. To paraphrase the late Michael Landon, "No punishment that could be imagined could be enough to end the nightmarish events of an emotionally immature stalker.
